17 migrants from Bangladesh drown in Mediterranean, 300 rescued by Tunisian, Libyan navy

17 migrants from Bangladesh reported to have drowned and more than 300 rescued after the boat in which they were travelling sank in the Mediterranean.

The Tunisian and Libyan naval units launched rescue operations to save the passengers in the boat.

The cause behind the boat sink is stated to be fire in the engine. According to survivors, those ill-fated migrants died due to suffocation after fire in the engine.

Sources citing the survivors said, those who died had paid less amount to the human traffickers than those who survived. They were exposed to the smoke and died of suffocation.

According to reports a large number of migrants from Bangladesh came to Libya during the country’s peak days when its economy was doing well and the Libya attracted a large number of foreign investment.

To fill the gap of job requirement many workers from Bangladesh came to Libya.

Now when the country’s economy is not doing well, not many jobs are left for migrant workers and there is a trend to migrate to Europe from Libya.
