- PRAVASI SAMWAD is running a series on 2023 Prvasi Bharatiya Samman awardees, who were conferred the Award for their distinguished work during the 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Indore.
- Dr Chennupati was one of the 27 honourees. The highest civilian award for the people Indian Diaspora or an organisation or institution established and run by Non-Resident Indians or Persons of Indian Origin, is given by the President of India. From 2016, the Government of India has doubled the number of awardees each year to 30 after a decision to grant the award once every two years.
Professor Chennupati Jagadish was among the 27 recipients of the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award at the 17th edition of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas held in the Indian city of Indore on January 8, 9, and 10.
The awards were given to the distinguished members of the Indian diaspora on January 10. Draupadi Murmu, President of India, honoured the awardees amid the presence of some country heads, a large number of Indian diaspora people drawn from different parts of the world, Indian ministers and many others.
Prof Jagadish was given the award for his remarkable contribution to ‘Science and Technology and Education.’
Awards are not new to Prof Jagadish. He has been honoured with many awards, including Australia’s highest civilian honour, Companion of the Order of Australia.
Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award, however, “is special” to Prof Jagdish, who treats it as an honour and recognition from India, the country where he was born, grew and had his basic education.
“He received Australia’s Civilian honour ‘Companion of the Order of Australia’ in 2016. He, along with his wife, has started the Chennupati and Vidya Jagdish Endowment’ to support Indian students in doing research in the ANU.”
“I am grateful for the honour… It has been a humbling experience to get the honour from the President of India,” said Prof Jagdish, who is President of the Australian Academy of Science.
“I am passionate about doing science and making a difference in other people’s lives; any recognitions are a bonus. I’m grateful to both the Australian and Indian Governments for honouring me and recognising my efforts during the past 35-plus years,” the Australian Academy of Science quoted him as saying.
“Prof Jagadish Chennupati has been awarded the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman for his contribution in Science and Technology and Education. He is a distinguished professor and Head of the Semiconductor Optoelectronics and Nanotechnology Group in the Research School of Physics and Engineering, Australian National University (ANU). He is the first person of Indian origin to be elected President of the Australian Academy of Science. He has also served as the President of the Indian Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc (IEEE),” the citation released by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs on the occasion of the PBS Award ceremony said.
