28 Indian students were deported from US this year

Concerns Escalate, Government Advocates Fair Treatment and Urges Diplomatic Dialogue

The Indian government has raised concerns over the deportation of 28 Indian students from the United States in 2023, according to a disclosure made in the Lok Sabha on Friday. V Muraleedharan, Minister of State for External Affairs, highlighted the government’s consistent efforts to address these incidents with US authorities and stressed the need for fairness in the treatment of Indian students holding valid visas.

Responding to queries, Muraleedharan acknowledged that similar challenges were being faced by Indian nationals, including students, in Canada. Instances of deportation were attributed to the alleged submission of fraudulent letters of admission to Canadian academic institutions, often facilitated by unscrupulous agents in India.

Ongoing diplomatic channels are being utilized to address the issue with Canada, aiming for a comprehensive resolution and safeguarding the rights of Indian students studying abroad

In response to these challenges, the Indian government has collaborated with the government of Punjab to identify and prosecute entities involved in such cases. Proactive measures include engagement with Canadian authorities to ensure the legal stay of affected individuals in accordance with local laws, emphasizing fairness and a humanitarian approach, considering the students’ lack of culpability.

The Minister revealed that diplomatic efforts have resulted in some affected Indian nationals receiving stay orders on deportation notices or temporary resident visas. Ongoing diplomatic channels are being utilized to address the issue with Canada, aiming for a comprehensive resolution and safeguarding the rights of Indian students studying abroad.
