Bhatinda beauty pageant advertisement raises a stink

The posters for the event were seen on October 14 in several parts of the city, including the Ajit Singh Road area of Bathinda

A beauty pageant in Punjab has made it to the headlines because of the controversial rules framed by the organizers. The eligibility criteria mentioned that only beautiful contestants would be allowed to participate and that they should be from the “general category,” referring to the higher hierarchies of the Hindu caste system. The winner would get a chance to marry an NRI from Canada.

The posters for the event were seen on October 14 in several parts of the city, including the Ajit Singh Road area of Bathinda.

Enraged by the advertisements of the pageant, which was scheduled to be held on October 23 at the Sweet Milan Hotel in Bathinda, various social and religious organizations protested. Two persons have been arrested on charges of insulting women in the garb of a beauty contest. Bathinda police on Twitter described the posters as “objectionable” in which “indecent words were written against women,” and announced an investigation into the matter.

The owner of Hotel Sweet Milan said that no one had made a reservation for the event. He even said that he planned to file a complaint with the police about the misuse of his name.
