Sharjah is witnessing a significant boost in tourism, with India playing a pivotal role in this growth. According to Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, Chairman of the Sharjah Commerce & Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA), the emirate saw an 11% increase in hotel guests, totaling over 1.5 million visitors in 2023. This aligns with the UAE Tourism Strategy 2031, which aims to double hotel guests and increase GDP contribution to AED 450 billion by 2031.

India contributes a notable 11% to Sharjah’s tourism market share, with travelers drawn to the emirate’s diverse attractions and premium experiences. Major Indian cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, and Chennai are key sources of tourists, highlighting Sharjah’s appeal to a broad spectrum of visitors.

Addressing perceptions of limited leisure and nightlife, Sharjah is evolving by blending its rich cultural heritage with modern amenities

Investment in infrastructure is a critical component of Sharjah’s tourism strategy. The $272 million investment in the Kalba Road expansion and traffic improvements aims to enhance intra-emirate connectivity and ease congestion. The revitalization of Kalba, including historic site restoration and modern infrastructure development, positions it as a significant tourist destination. This approach underscores Sharjah’s commitment to preserving its heritage while fostering tourism growth.

Sharjah is also enhancing its travel infrastructure with initiatives like the $336 million expansion of Sharjah International Airport. This expansion reflects the UAE’s dedication to technological advancement, ensuring seamless travel experiences for tourists.

The implementation of a unified tourist visa system within the GCC is expected to enhance inter-regional travel, making it easier for tourists to explore the region. This system will benefit Sharjah by increasing accessibility and attracting more visitors, bolstering its position as a cultural hub and a key destination within the GCC.

Sharjah’s strategy of “competing collaboratively” within the GCC emphasizes mutual growth and innovation. Through joint tourism campaigns, cultural exchanges, and cross-promotional events, Sharjah strengthens its own tourism sector while contributing to the collective success of the region.

Addressing perceptions of limited leisure and nightlife, Sharjah is evolving by blending its rich cultural heritage with modern amenities. This transformation reflects a broader trend in the GCC, where governments are investing in diversifying tourism offerings to appeal to a youthful demographic.
