India-Canada diplomatic standoff: Will visa services be impacted?

The India-Canada diplomatic standoff may significantly affect visa services, particularly for students and professionals

The ongoing diplomatic standoff between India and Canada has raised concerns about the future of visa services, particularly for Indian students and professionals. As relations between the two nations deteriorate, visa applicants face growing uncertainty, and potential changes in processing times may emerge.

Canada recently withdrew a large portion of its diplomats from India, cutting down its mission’s operational capacity. This downsizing could lead to delays and reductions in visa approvals. Indian authorities have also hinted at taking further measures following accusations by Canada regarding the involvement of Indian agents in the killing of a Khalistani terrorist. While both nations have denied wrongdoing, the tension has already disrupted visa processes in the past.

Both nations’ actions could lead to tighter restrictions and delays, further complicating an already tense situation for visa applicants

More than 400,000 Indian students currently study in Canada, making it a critical destination for education. However, earlier in 2024, Canada capped the number of student visas issued to international applicants, including Indians, by 35%. This move has already impacted thousands of students and has reduced the number of Indian students enrolling in Canadian universities. Further strain on diplomatic relations could worsen the situation, leading to even fewer visa opportunities for Indian students.

Beyond education, visa services for tourists, workers, and other categories may also see delays or reductions. India’s Ministry of External Affairs has stated that it “reserves the right to take further steps” in response to Canada’s diplomatic actions, hinting at possible future restrictions.

Although visa services resumed in 2023 after a brief suspension, the current situation threatens to impact applicants once again. Canadians applying for Indian visas could face similar challenges, as seen previously when India temporarily halted visa services for Canadians.
