In a speech delivered to the Indian community at the University of Queensland in Brisbane on November 3, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted the transformative progress in India-Australia relations. He attributed this shift to four pivotal factors: leadership from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, active cooperation from the Australian government, evolving global dynamics, and the dedicated contributions of the Indian community, reported ANI.

“This transformation did not happen with the India-Australia vehicle on autopilot,” he noted, commending the sustained efforts and mutual commitment required to achieve this progress
Jaishankar underscored the rapid growth of India-Australia ties, noting that while Australia might not have been among India’s most crucial partners a decade ago, it now holds a significant place. “This is my fifth visit to Australia in the last three years,” Jaishankar remarked, reflecting on how the bilateral relationship has gained momentum. He recalled a conversation with an author who listed Australia among India’s key global partners, a recognition that would have seemed unlikely a decade prior.
The evolution of this relationship, Jaishankar explained, stemmed from deliberate efforts rather than passive progression. “In 2014, Prime Minister Modi asked me why our relationship with Australia had not developed as it should have, given our natural ties in language, culture, and tradition,” he recalled. This question prompted a reassessment of untapped potential, which has since led both governments to actively foster closer ties.
