This year began with a notable trend of Indian students flocking to foreign universities, particularly in Canada and the United Kingdom, seeking better opportunities and ambitious goals. Despite India’s diverse educational landscape, the allure of international institutions remains strong.
However, by the time summer arrived, a significant issue emerged. Many universities, including prestigious Ivy League colleges, struggled to provide internships and job placements, particularly for Indian students. Companies showed a preference for local candidates over Asian applicants, leaving many Indian students unable to secure internships despite months of effort.
This year, UK universities saw a significant drop in applicants from India, with over 21,000 fewer applications for Master’s programs
Additionally, the stricter visa regulations implemented earlier this year have had a substantial impact. The new visa rules, which make it difficult for students to sponsor their families and convert their student visas into work visas before completing their studies, have deterred many prospective Indian students.
Anuj Gupta, CEO of Youngrads, highlighted the financial implications for UK universities, noting their heavy reliance on tuition fees from international students to support various academic disciplines. The decline is particularly pronounced at the Master’s level, with a drop of more than 15% by December 2023.
