From infrastructure to civic sense to traffic, the traveler highlights Mumbai’s shortcomings
An Indian man, Yash, recently shared his observations on Reddit after a trip to Dubai, drawing stark comparisons between the city and his hometown, Mumbai. Having lived in Mumbai for over 40 years, he pointed out the vast differences in infrastructure, civic discipline, and overall urban planning, arguing that Dubai far surpasses Mumbai on multiple levels, reported indianexpress.com.
‘Zero traffic sense, non-existent infrastructure, unbearable pollution’
Yash described his experience of returning to Mumbai after a week-long visit to Dubai, highlighting the city’s challenges. “When you are back from a developed country, you can see just how far behind we are. I am a Mumbaikar, born and spent 40+ years of my life here. This wasn’t my first trip to a developed country, but this time the differences just hit differently. Non-existent infrastructure, zero civic sense, zero traffic sense, trash and rubble everywhere, pollution so bad it burns your throat,” he wrote.
He criticized Mumbai’s chaotic traffic, poor road discipline, and ongoing construction work, stating that the city’s rapid expansion lacks proper planning. While acknowledging that Dubai also faces heavy traffic, he emphasized that drivers there follow rules, stop at signals, and respect clearly marked lanes—something he believes is missing in Mumbai.
The viral discussion has reignited debates about Mumbai’s urban planning, raising concerns about whether India’s financial capital is keeping pace with global cities.
Viral post sparks debate over Mumbai’s urban issues
Yash’s post gained traction quickly, with many agreeing with his sentiments. Some compared Mumbai’s urban conditions to cities in Sri Lanka and even Central African nations, stating that Mumbai still lags behind in civic sense and cleanliness.
“You can compare Mumbai to cities in Sri Lanka and you’ll still see us as a backward community. Try Central African countries and we still lose out on civic sense,” one user commented.
“Yup, totally agreed, I have traveled to 12 countries, and I would rate them all better than Mumbai. We lack civic sense, cleanliness, and have terrible roads,” another added.
