Jubilation is in the air as Australia inches towards reopening international travel, as Prime Minister Scott Morrison announces a move to establish a travel bubble with Singapore.
While in the beginning it will be in favour of those with work and study visas, Singapore’s prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, was happy entering the endemic Covid future in a positive environment.
Currently, Australia allows only New Zealanders to visit the continent freely. Australia has been strictly guarding its people, with closed borders ever since the pandemic started. In the beginning, it will allow only vaccinated citizens, permanent residents and their family members. They will not be required to quarantine. This will follow the move to open up for visa holders, and then by and by, it will be the turn of tourists to be allowed entry.
It is noteworthy that while earlier Singapore allowed visitors from Germany, Brunei and South Korea to enter without quarantine, now vaccinated people from Canada, Denmark, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Britain and the United States have also been allowed on the same terms
While Australians will be able to freely re-enter from 1 November, with Melbourne to reopening, at present, 70 per cent of its population is vaccinated. On the other hand, 84 per cent of Singapore’s population is fully vaccinated
