Barrack wall collapses, injuring 22 prisoners in MP jail

There were 255 prisoners inside the prison, sleeping in barrack numbers 6 and 7. However, the barracks of the jail have a maximum capacity to house 172 prisoners

A total of 22 prisoners were hurt, of whom one was seriously injured, when the wall of barrack number 6 suddenly fell in Bhind district jail of Indian State of Madhya Pradesh at around 5 am on Saturday, according to Bhind police.

There were 255 prisoners inside the prison, sleeping in barrack numbers 6 and 7. However, the barracks of the jail have a maximum capacity to house 172 prisoners.

According to reports, continuous and heavy rainfall over a couple of days resulted in the water seeping into the jail walls since the ancient structure, over 65 years old, was already dilapidated.

Finally, it resulted in the collapse of the wall.

Police personnel rushed to the jail soon after the wall collapsed. During the rescue operation, the seriously injured inmate was taken to Gwalior for advanced medical treatment. The rest of the injured prisoners were taken to the district hospital. The administration got down to clearing the debris, which could have posed a hazard to the rest of the jail building, too, putting the lives of other inmates at risk too.

According to Manoj Sahu, the jail superintendent, an inquiry has been ordered to know the exact reason behind the collapse.
