Canada route sees surge for illegal us entry by Indian nationals led by Gujaratis

  • Despite the growing trend of northern-route crossings, US border authorities have responded by intensifying security along the US-Canada boundary, implementing stringent measures to curb unauthorized entries

In a significant trend shift from October 2023 to September 2024, around 2.9 million individuals attempted to enter the United States illegally via Mexico and Canada, with 90,000 of these entrants hailing from India, gujaratsamachar.com reported.

This equates to an average of 10 Indian nationals every hour who are apprehended by US Customs and Border Protection (US-CBP) as they seek unauthorized entry into the US. Reports indicate that roughly half of these migrants are from Gujarat.

An evolving pattern shows a clear preference among immigrants to pursue entry through Canada rather than Mexico.

  • This surge in attempted illegal immigration underscores the adaptability of migration patterns and highlights the ongoing challenges faced by US border control efforts in managing security along both borders

Two main factors drive this shift: heightened scrutiny along the Mexico-US route and logistical barriers where migrants are often detained in transit countries like Dubai or Turkey before reaching Mexico. In contrast, the Canada route has gained favor due to its relatively lower risk profile, prompting many Gujaratis to consider it as a more viable option for reaching the United States.
