The Chinese Government’s policy to limit children’s online gaming to three hours a week is going to adversely affect the gaming industry. The policy will come into force from Wednesday (September 1, 2021).

The policy is being treated as one of the harshest restrictions on the gaming industry as the Chinese regulators are keeping track of the overall technology sector.

The policy is the latest in the series of policies taken by the government to tame the technology sector.

Last month the authorities targeted the e-commerce and online education sectors. They came out with new regulations to restrain anti-competitive conduct among the operators, as the sector witnessed rapid growth in the technology sector.

Under the latest policy for online games, minor children can play online games between 8pm to 9 pm on Fridays, weekends and public holidays, according to a notice from the National Press and Publication Administration.

In 2019 the authorities had put restrictions on online gaming and had allowed children to play online not more than an hour and a half per day and three hours on public holidays.

The restrictions are in line with the government’s policy to regulate the technology sector. The companies have expanded far and wide by offering messaging, payments and gaming services. Their products, according to some sociologists, are influencing the society adversely

The revised policy is going to affect the gaming industry adversely, as many operators had already started diversifying to other areas.

The Chinese government’s technology policy, however, is not limited only to online games.

The restrictions are in line with the government’s policy to regulate the technology sector. The companies have expanded far and wide by offering messaging, payments and gaming services. Their products, according to some sociologists, are influencing society adversely.

“They needed some kind of control and the latest regulations are on the right lines,” they said.
