Covid 19: Kerala announces Sunday curfew for next two weeks

Kerala registered 46,387 fresh coronavirus cases on Thursday, the highest ever single day spike since the outbreak of the pandemic.

As a new set of restrictions to check the spread of Coronavirus, the Indian State of Kerala has announced curfew on two consecutive Sundays, January 23 and January 30.

Only emergency services will be allowed to function on those days.

The number of Covid-19 cases reported on Thursday stood at 46,387, which is the highest ever single day spike since the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020.

With the new number announced on Thursday the total caseload in the State has gone to 54,87,898.

 

All classes except for final-year post graduation courses and Plus 1 and Plus 2, will be held online. Residential schools can conduct physical classes if they are functioning under the bio-bubble concept

 

Health department’s data hints at 43,529 Covid-19 cases on May 12, 2021, the highest ever cases in the state so far. Total number of samples tested on last 24 hours were 1,15,357, while there are 1,99,041 active Covid-19 cases. The number of deaths reported on Thursday was 341, taking the toll to 51,501.

Recovered with Covid-19 stand are 15,388 till Thursday. Total 52,59,594 recovered from the infection.

Among the restrictions announced in the wake of Covid-19 surge are:

  1. Curfew on Sunday (January 23 and January 30). Only essential services are allowed to operate.
  2. Palakkad Idukki, Wayanad, Pathanamthitta, and Thiruvananthapuram are under ‘B’ category of infection severity. At places identified as Category B-affected holding any public function has been barred. There is permission for online religious events. Weddings and funerals can have 20 people in attendance.
  3. At ‘A’ category places like Ernakulam, Alappuzha and Kollam districts, crowding at public places like malls, beaches, and tourist places has been banned. The number of people at marriages, funerals and other public functions at ‘A’ category places has been limited to 50.
  4. Certain government employees like women having children aged below two years of age, cancer patients and persons with severe comorbidities are allowed to work from home.
