Distressed Hyderabad Student in Chicago to Come Back Home

Reports indicate that the consulate was able to establish contact with her, offering assistance, including medical support and arrangements for her return to India

The Consulate General of India in Chicago has made a significant breakthrough in reaching out to Syeda Lulu Minhaj Zaidi, a woman student from Hyderabad, who was facing severe depression and hunger in the US. Reports indicate that the consulate was able to establish contact with her, offering assistance, including medical support and arrangements for her return to India, as reported by PTI.

Zaidi had ventured to the US with aspirations of pursuing higher education but found herself in a dire situation on the streets of Chicago, nearly starving. Concerned about her well-being, her mother penned a heartfelt letter to the External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, requesting his intervention to bring her daughter back home.

The consulate and authorities concerned are closely monitoring the situation, prepared to provide any necessary help and ensure Zaidi’s safe return to India. The primary focus remains on her well-being and mental health during this challenging period

Gratefully, the Consulate General of India in Chicago shared the positive news through platform X (Twitter), stating, “We are relieved to have been able to get in touch with Ms. Syeda Zaidi and have offered her help, including medical assistance and arrangements for her travel back to India. Thankfully, she is in good health and has been able to speak with her mother in India.” However, as of now, Zaidi has yet to respond to the offered support for her return. Nevertheless, the consulate reaffirms its readiness to extend any assistance required.

According to her mother, Zaidi embarked on her journey to the US in August 2021 to pursue a Master’s degree at Trine University in Detroit. Unfortunately, for the past two months, she had cut off communication with her family, leaving them anxious and worried. Recently, two Hyderabadi youths brought to light the distressing news of Zaidi’s deep depression and the unfortunate incident of her belongings being stolen, which left her in a dire situation, struggling to find even basic sustenance on the streets of Chicago.

The consulate and authorities concerned are closely monitoring the situation, prepared to provide any necessary help and ensure Zaidi’s safe return to India. The primary focus remains on her well-being and mental health during this challenging period.
