Alphonso this season and Langra, Chausa, Dushehri soon
Soon the 4.4 million Indians in the US or the entire US population of 332 million people can taste Indian mangoes again as the Indian government has secured the approval of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to export Indian mangoes to the US in the new season, an IANS report says.
As part of the mutual agreement, India will be able to export mangoes during the season to the US from March onwards, starting with the Alphonso variety.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions the exports to the US remain suspended since 2020 because inspectors from the approval authority USDA were unable to visit India.
There are chances of getting clearance for mango verities like Langra, Chausa, Dushehri, Fazli, etc from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal
Under the agreement, India and the US would follow joint protocol on irradiation for India’s mango exports and pomegranate exports to the US and import of cherries and Alfalfa hay from the US, the IANS report said.
A new plan has been initiated. Under this there would be phase-wise transfer of oversight of pre-clearance of Irradiation treatment to India.
The USDA approval would open up exports from Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, which are traditional mango production belts.
There are chances of getting clearance for mango verities like Langra, Chausa, Dushehri, Fazli, etc from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal.
