Tinessa Kaur, a 32-year-old barrister of Indian descent, has made history by becoming the first Sikh woman to win the prestigious Young Pro-Bono Barrister of the Year award in the UK. Her journey from a homeless teenager to a celebrated legal professional is nothing short of remarkable.

Kaur’s early life was fraught with challenges. At the age of 17, she moved from Leicester to Greenford, West London, relying on the Sikh community for support as she transitioned from homelessness to pursuing her education.

  • Kaur’s dedication extends beyond her professional achievements. She spends her free time offering pro-bono legal assistance to underserved communities

  • Additionally, she co-founded the Sikh Lawyers Association, a UK-based group that supports and assists Sikh lawyers and students

Her father had left the family when she was young, and by the time she completed school in 2010, he was in prison. Facing the dangers of street life, including exposure to gangs, Kaur found refuge and support within the close-knit Sikh community in Greenford.

Despite these hardships, Kaur’s determination never wavered. In 2013, she began her journey towards a legal career by pursuing a law degree. After graduating, she completed her Bar studies and was called to the Bar in 2019. By 2023, at the age of 32, she secured Pupillage, allowing her to practice independently as a barrister.
