The Minister highlighted the challenge posed by several foreign countries that do not readily share information on individuals staying illegally unless under orders of deportation
In a recent parliamentary update on December 21, Minister of State for External Affairs, V Muraleedharan, disclosed that the government has taken a significant step in addressing illegal immigration by identifying and notifying 2,925 illegal agents through the e-Migrate portal as of October 30, 2023.
Responding to queries raised by MP Deepender Singh Hooda regarding the extent of illegal immigration from India and the reasons behind it, Muraleedharan emphasized the involvement of unscrupulous travel agencies in the illegal recruitment for overseas employment. He revealed that the e-Migrate Portal is consistently updated with information on these illegal agents.
This disclosure underscores the complexities surrounding the tracking of illegal immigration, emphasizing the need for international collaboration and improved information-sharing mechanisms to address the challenges posed by illegal agents and unauthorized overseas employment agencies
Addressing concerns about the difficulty in obtaining comprehensive data on illegal immigrants and India’s ranking compared to other nations, the Minister highlighted the challenge posed by several foreign countries that do not readily share information on individuals staying illegally unless under orders of deportation. He elaborated on the varying deportation procedures, indicating that not all host governments inform Indian Missions about the arrest, detention, and deportation of individuals with valid travel documents.
Muraleedharan pointed out that Indian missions are contacted primarily for cases requiring nationality verification and the issuance of Emergency Certificates (EC) for deportees. However, due to the lack of consistent reporting by foreign countries, the exact number of Indians deported remains unavailable with the Ministry of External Affairs.
This disclosure underscores the complexities surrounding the tracking of illegal immigration, emphasizing the need for international collaboration and improved information-sharing mechanisms to address the challenges posed by illegal agents and unauthorized overseas employment agencies.
