Indian health authorities are closely monitoring reports from China about the spread of human metapneumovirus (HMPV), amid concerns over a potential new variant. The situation has garnered attention due to social media videos showing hospitals in China overwhelmed with patients, timesofindia.indiatimes.com.

No major concerns as HMPV is a common respiratory virus, says Health Ministry

Atul Goel, Director General of Health Services, assured the public that while respiratory infections typically rise in the winter, there is no reason for panic.

“HMPV is a common respiratory virus, causing mild symptoms such as cold and flu, particularly affecting the elderly and infants. However, it is not something to be worried about,” Goel explained.

Health officials in India, including those in West Bengal, have emphasized vigilance and are prepared for potential increases in respiratory cases. “There is no reason to panic, but we remain vigilant,” said a senior health official from Bengal.

Local doctors in Kolkata echoed the sentiment, describing HMPV as a relatively harmless virus, noting that several patients with similar symptoms have already been treated this winter. The National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) continues to monitor respiratory infections and influenza cases across the country.

Health infrastructure in India remains equipped to handle any increase in cases
