“Our position has been quite consistent. The core issue remains the space that is given to extremists and terrorists and anti-India elements in that country.”
– Arindam Bagchi, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson
In a recent development, India has reiterated its long-standing concerns regarding Canada’s provision of space to extremists and anti-India elements. According to a statement from the External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi on December 21, India emphasized the core issue of the freedom given to terrorists and individuals with anti-India agendas operating from within Canada. Bagchi expressed hope that Canada would take decisive action against such separatist and anti-India elements.
“Our position has been quite consistent. The core issue remains the space that is given to extremists and terrorists and anti-India elements in that country,” stated Bagchi. He further underlined that these elements were misusing the freedom of speech and expression in Canada.

The strained relations between India and Canada have intensified following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations in September, linking Indian agents to the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June. This tension was underscored by Trudeau’s recent acknowledgment that there may be a “tonal shift” in India-Canada relations after a US indictment alleging a conspiracy to murder a Sikh separatist on American soil.
Trudeau indicated a growing understanding that a confrontational approach might not be effective and expressed openness to collaboration in addressing shared concerns. He mentioned, “There’s an understanding that maybe, maybe just churning out attacks against Canada isn’t going to make this problem go away.”
