Responding to alarming reports indicating a disproportionately high number of Indian student fatalities in Canada compared to other nations, Arindam Bagchi, the spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), addressed the issue on December 7. Bagchi urged a nuanced perspective, emphasizing that the death count should be considered in light of the substantial Indian student population in Canada, which might contribute to the seemingly elevated toll.
Recently, in a written response to the Rajya Sabha, V Muraleedharan, the Minister of State for External Affairs, revealed that 403 incidents of Indian student deaths abroad had been reported since 2018. Notably, Canada recorded the highest number of fatalities at 91.
“While Canada numerically has the highest count, it is crucial to evaluate these figures in relation to the overall Indian student population in the country,” highlighted Bagchi. He stressed the need to understand the nature of these incidents, whether they resulted from violence, accidents, or other causes. Bagchi expressed uncertainty about the issue warranting direct intervention with the Canadian government but acknowledged the existence of individual cases involving foul play.

Bagchi stated, “Our consulates do reach out to families; we also engage with local authorities to support their ongoing investigations or legal proceedings.”
In his response to the Rajya Sabha, Muraleedharan underscored the Indian government’s commitment to prioritizing the safety and security of Indian students abroad. He outlined proactive measures, including regular interactions between officials from the Indian Mission and students at universities and educational institutions.
“In the event of any untoward incident, swift action is taken with the host country’s authorities to ensure a thorough investigation, and perpetrators are brought to justice,” Muraleedharan assured. Additionally, distressed Indian students receive comprehensive consular assistance, encompassing emergency medical care and accommodation when necessary. The government remains dedicated to addressing the concerns surrounding Indian students’ well-being abroad and fostering a secure environment for them.
