Safeguarding Our Global Family: Empowering NRIs for a Secure Tomorrow
Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs) from over 30 countries are rallying behind a crucial cause – the implementation of an NRI Protection Bill or the establishment of a centralized NRI agency within the Indian government. The call for this legislation stems from a growing concern over the rising instances of organized crime targeting NRIs, encompassing offenses such as land encroachment, cheating, forgery, and illegal financial transactions.
Allegations abound of NRIs falling victim to deceitful practices orchestrated by unscrupulous individuals ranging from builders to acquaintances and even bank officials. These fraudulent activities often manifest in property investments gone awry, leaving substantial sums of money, estimated to be between ₹800 crore to ₹1,200 crore, at stake for approximately 900 NRIs. Among the affected are professionals of various stripes – doctors, engineers, innovators, executives, and more – hailing from the United States, Canada, Europe, and beyond.
In an article The Hindu quoted Subhas Balappanavar, convener of the NRI Grievances’ Group. He voiced the collective frustration, stating, “There are builders and developers who target only NRIs with something very similar to Ponzi schemes. Hundreds of NRIs are facing these issues. We are remitting over $125 billion a year which forms a significant part of the Indian economy. We are victims of such crime trends, and we need solutions in the form of protection from the government.”
The stark reality painted by NRIs underscores the imperative for swift action. According to their data analysis, an alarming statistic emerges – one in every three NRIs faces victimization in India. In light of this distressing trend, the clamor for the NRI Protection Bill grows louder, with the community seeking redressal and safeguards against further exploitation.
The proposed Bill comes replete with key provisions aimed at fortifying the rights and interests of NRIs. Among these are legal protections tailored to address property disputes, the establishment of an NRI investigation agency tasked with probing crimes against NRIs, the issuance of non-bailable warrants for accused parties, and the introduction of provisions for online voting, among others.

Having already initiated communication with the Prime Minister’s Office via email, NRIs are now gearing up to amplify their plea by submitting a memorandum to Indian consulates worldwide. Their concerted efforts underscore the gravity of the situation and the urgency with which action must be taken to assuage the concerns of NRIs and safeguard their interests.
In a globalized world where NRIs play an instrumental role in contributing to India’s economy and fostering cross-border ties, their protection becomes not just a matter of domestic policy but a testament to India’s commitment to its diaspora. As the voices of NRIs reverberate across continents, it is incumbent upon the Indian government to heed their call and enact the NRI Protection Bill, thereby affirming its unwavering support for the welfare of its overseas citizens.
