India’s High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma, has expressed his satisfaction with the Canadian government’s efforts to ensure the safety of Indian diplomats in the country. This reassurance comes in the wake of concerns raised by New Delhi regarding the security of its diplomatic personnel earlier this year. The Canadian Press has reported that High Commissioner Verma is optimistic about the potential for both countries to navigate the complex diaspora politics and forge stronger ties.

A notable issue that has strained relations between India and Canada is the advocacy within some segments of the Sikh community in Canada for the creation of an independent state known as Khalistan in Punjab. The Indian government views this movement as extremist and a threat to national security.

High Commissioner Verma remains hopeful that diplomatic channels and dialogue can be used to address these sensitive issues and strengthen the relationship between India and Canada

Tensions escalated in June following the tragic shooting death of the head of a gurdwara in the Vancouver area. Some members of the Sikh community believe that this incident may be linked to foreign interference.

However, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has stated that they have found no evidence of such a link and have no reason to believe that the Sikh community in Canada is at risk. Despite this, a U.S.-based group has issued alarming calls for Sikhs in Canada to “besiege” India’s diplomatic missions and uncover the home addresses of its diplomats, even issuing posters with the provocative slogan “Kill India.”

High Commissioner Verma remains hopeful that diplomatic channels and dialogue can be used to address these sensitive issues and strengthen the relationship between India and Canada.
