Indian-origin man in Canada faces racist rant, calls out blame culture

As he continues to live in Canada, Annamalai stands firm in his resolve to raise awareness about racial discrimination and emphasize the positive contributions of immigrants

Ashwin Annamalai, an Indian-origin Canadian citizen, recently experienced racial abuse in his neighborhood of Waterloo, Ontario. While walking down the street, an elderly woman confronted Annamalai with offensive gestures and eventually demanded that he “go back” to India, thequint.com reported.

The 32-year-old software professional, who initially moved to Canada in 2018 as a student, shared a video of the incident on social media on October 16, capturing the disturbing interaction.

Annamalai believes such incidents not only highlight the need for greater tolerance but also show the necessity for deeper conversations about cultural diversity and acceptance in today’s world

Reflecting on the encounter, Annamalai expressed that some residents of the area seem to need a “scapegoat” to blame for economic challenges. For him, this incident highlighted a tendency in certain communities to unfairly target immigrants as the root cause of financial and social issues.

Annamalai hopes sharing his experience will bring awareness to the racial biases still prevalent in communities across Canada, where immigrants contribute significantly to society and the economy.
