As the global education landscape evolves, institutions in the US and other countries with stable policies are likely to attract more students from India
As visa policies in Canada, the UK, and Australia tighten, many Indian students are redirecting their educational aspirations toward the United States and New Zealand. A recent survey by IDP Education reveals a significant shift in preferences, driven largely by stability in post-study work options and visa policies, business-standard.com reported.
The survey, conducted from August to September 2024, gathered insights from over 6,000 students worldwide. Indian respondents—1,346 in total—comprised the largest demographic, followed by students from China, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nigeria, and Nepal. The data reflects an evolving trend, as visa challenges and rising costs reshape global study decisions.
Decline in Popularity of Traditional Destinations
Canada has seen the largest drop in popularity, with only 16% of students selecting it as their destination, a decrease of 9% from the previous year. This trend appears linked to heightened diplomatic tensions between Canada and India and restrictive visa policies designed to address local labor needs. Australia and the UK experienced slight declines, attracting 24% and 21% of students, respectively. Many students and parents have expressed concern over the unpredictability of these policies.
According to IDP counselors, young students are delaying plans or seeking alternative destinations due to the unstable policy environment. “Students want stability,” one counselor observed. “Unpredictable visa policies add stress and increasingly influence decision-making.”
US and New Zealand Gain Favor
In contrast, the US and New Zealand have gained popularity. Survey results show a 4% increase in students opting for the US, now representing 23% of Indian respondents, while New Zealand attracts 5%. Indian students find the US appealing for its consistent policies, quality education, and promising career paths. “The opportunities for post-study work and stability make the US attractive,” shared one Indian student.
The survey underscores the significance of post-study work visas, with 62% of students willing to consider alternate countries for more accessible work permit pathways. For Indian students, the search for quality education and a secure future abroad may increasingly point toward destinations like the US and New Zealand
Key Factors Driving Decision-Making
Visa policies play a critical role, with 52% of students prioritizing post-study work options and 43% focusing on pathways to permanent residency. Additionally, required savings and visa fees are major considerations, especially for students considering multiple destinations. In 2024, 66% of respondents expressed openness to studying in more than one country, marking a 10% increase from 2022.
Rising costs also deter students. Nearly half of those who withdrew from their plans cited unaffordable tuition fees, while 35% pointed to high living costs and visa expenses. Parents, too, raised concerns over post-study work opportunities and financial obligations, underscoring the need for secure pathways for international students.
The US Leads in Education Quality and Employment Prospects
Among students still intent on studying abroad, the US stands out as the preferred choice for education quality and post-graduation employment. IDP’s survey ranked countries on several factors, including value for money, graduate employment opportunities, and post-study work visa policies. The US consistently ranked highest for education quality, affordability, and work opportunities, while the UK and Australia held strong positions as well.
In addition, respondents highlighted affordable visa fees, lower savings requirements, and flexibility to switch between visa types as essential factors in their decision-making.
