Indians face increasing barriers amid Canada’s changing immigration landscape, political strain

The situation has created an uncertain and challenging environment for immigrants. Indian workers, students, and tourists are bearing the brunt of the strained diplomatic relations, further complicating ties between India and Canada

Canada, once known for its welcoming stance toward immigrants, has recently shifted its policies, causing significant disruptions, especially for Indian nationals. This change is largely attributed to new immigration policies introduced under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, reported indiaherald.com.

With mounting political tensions between Canada and India, Indians now find themselves particularly affected by these developments.

A recent report by indiaherald.com revealed that Canada has been denying entry to international visitors at an unprecedented rate. In the first seven months of 2024, Canadian authorities turned away an average of 3,727 visitors per month—a 20 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

The new measures may be politically motivated, aimed at addressing growing concerns among Canadian citizens regarding immigration, housing shortages, and population growth

Additionally, there has been a sharp decline in the number of work and study permits issued to foreign nationals, with Indian immigrants, the largest group of newcomers, disproportionately impacted by these restrictions.

Relations between the two nations have soured, particularly after Canada accused India of involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. As tensions escalate, Trudeau’s administration has tightened immigration policies, seemingly with an eye on the upcoming 2025 Canadian elections.
