Actually, the first person to jump inside the Majlis Al Jinn cave was German national Felix Baumgartner in 2007. He had to be pulled out of the cave with the help of a winch.

The Majlis Al-Jinn cave is the second largest cave in the world. The floor of the cave has a surface of 58,000 sq metres. That is about as much as the equivalent of 10 soccer fields put together.

The descent to the bottom of the floor of the cave is 162 metres.

Geologists estimate that the cave is more than 50 million years old. It is also called the Salma Cave because the cave is situated on the Selma Plateau, in the Eastern Hajar mountains.

When Stefan Glowacz and Chris Sharma did their 12-day climb of Majlis Al-Jinn in 2013, they had to use more than 3000 metres of rope. And while they were inside, they also did a major clean-up of trash and refuse that had accumulated over the years. So what also saw the light of day were 40 bags of trash.

Besides the two climbers, there were another 20 persons taking care of filming the whole descent and ascent, besides five jeeps and more than one ton of equipment.

The cave was first discovered by US Geologist Don Davidson in 1983 and he was the first to go inside the cave the same year. A year later, his wife rappelled to the bottom of the cave.

The largest cave chamber in the world is located in the state of Sarawak, on the Malaysian side of Borneo, in the Gunung Mulu National Park. It was declared a Unesco heritage site in 2000.

The Sarawak Chamber could fit 40 Boeing 747 airplanes. It is 700 metres long, 400 meters wide and at least 70 meters tall.

Baumgartner is the same person who created history more recently when he made the successful jump from the stratosphere to earth.

The Oman Tourism Ministry is considering plans to open up the Majlis Al Jinns to tourists in collaboration with the Chapman University of Orange, California, USA.
