Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives, is on an official visit to India from January 2 to 4, 2025. This visit builds on the momentum of the recent State Visit by Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to India in October 2024.

Key agreements and discussions reaffirm regional cooperation and mutual priorities

On January 3, 2025, Dr. Khaleel met with External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar for bilateral talks. The leaders reviewed progress on agreements made during President Muizzu’s October visit and identified areas needing further collaboration. Dr. Jaishankar reiterated India’s commitment to its “Neighbourhood First” policy and Vision SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region), emphasizing India’s role in supporting Maldives’ growth and security.

Dr. Khaleel acknowledged India’s timely financial assistance and recognized India as Maldives’ “First Responder” during critical moments. He reaffirmed Maldives’ commitment to the Joint Vision for India-Maldives Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership.

As part of the visit, India and Maldives signed an MoU for Phase-III of High-Impact Community Development Projects in Maldives, supported by Indian grant assistance.

This visit continues the tradition of high-level engagement between the two nations, strengthening ties for mutual benefit and fostering greater stability and development in the Indian Ocean Region.
