Ayaan Shankta, has proved beyond doubt that you don’t have to wait to grow up to change the world – You can do it right away if you believe in yourself, more importantly if you believe that what you want to do is the right thing to do
The 12-year-old ‘eco-warrior’ from Mumbai is one of the 25 environmental activists from around the world honoured by Action for Nature (AFN) a US-based non-profit that encourages young people in the 8-16 age group to come up with solutions to real problems that threaten their planet.
The international non-profit encourages young people to nurture a love and respect for the Earth and to take personal action to improve the environment.
His project on Conservation and Rehabilitation of Powai Lake in Mumbai, India has won him the third place as well as global accolades. The award recognizes eco-conscious youth aged 8 to 16 who are taking crucial steps to solve tough environmental problems.
“Not only will this help in bringing about ecological balance in the thickly populated city of Mumbai, but it will also help to conserve endangered species,” he says.
Says Ayaan: “”My mission is for the lake to regain its past glory as a clean and vibrant body of water,” He lives near a lake that used to be a source of drinking water for Mumbai, but has become a dumping ground for garbage and sewage.
“Not only will this help in bringing about ecological balance in the thickly populated city of Mumbai, but it will also help to conserve endangered species,” he says.
Ayaan’s project aims to raise awareness about pollution, clean up the lake, and protect its ecosystem. In addition to working with NGOs to raise awareness and organize clean-ups, Ayaan has authored an action report on lake conditions and is currently working on a documentary about Powai Lake.
Action For Nature President Beryl Kay says kids like Ayaan have shown that the next generation of leaders is here, and they are refusing to wait to solve the world’s most pressing environmental challenges.
“The projects that these young people have created will not only have real, positive impact on their communities, but they will also help solve global climate challenges and inspire others no matter what age to consider what they can do to help,” he says
All prize Winners will receive public recognition, media coverage and cash prize up to $500, certificate of achievement for outstanding efforts to help protect and preserve the environment and exclusive access to AFN’s Eco Hero Alumni Facebook Group
Just as importantly, winners will serve as role models for other young people by demonstrating that each individual can make a difference.
