NASA to send Indian astronaut to ISS by End of 2024 to fulfil US promise to PM Modi

US envoy Garcetti discussed potential advancements in nuclear energy projects in India, specifically in Mithi Virdhi, Gujarat, and Kovadda, Andhra Pradesh, contingent on the resolution of issues related to the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act 2010, which mandates compensation for nuclear incident victims under a no-fault liability regime

NASA is set to send an Indian astronaut to the International Space Station (ISS) by the end of 2024, fulfilling a commitment made to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his 2023 visit to the United States. This was announced by US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, who also confirmed that NASA will soon begin advanced training for Indian astronauts to support this joint mission.

The collaboration is part of broader US-India space cooperation efforts, including the NISAR project, a joint Earth-observing mission between NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), scheduled to launch by the end of the year. Garcetti commended ISRO’s achievements, particularly the cost-effective Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission.
