Prominent NRI businessman and philanthropist M A Yusuffali, paid Indian Rs 1 crore to save him from death row for killing a young Sudanese boy in a road accident in 2012.

The 45-year-old Indian was on death row in the United Arab Emirates.

NRI tycoon and Chairman of Lulu Group, M A Yusuffali, saved Becks Krishnan by paying blood money, which is financial compensation paid to the victim or heirs of a victim in the cases of death, bodily harm or property damage.

Krishnan hails from the Indian state of Kerala. The Supreme Court of UAE found him guilty of killing a Sudanese boy when he drove recklessly and rammed his vehicle into a group of children in September 2012.

When informed about his likely release, Krishnan could not believe the news.

In his statement to Indian Embassy, Krishnan said: “It is a re-birth for me, as I had lost all hope of seeing the outside world, let alone a free life. My only wish now is to see Yusuffali once before flying to my family.”

As the story goes, soon after the accident, Krishnan was put behind bars. His friends and relatives tried his release, but the victim’s family was not ready to pardon him.

Things got complicated when the Sudanese family moved to Sudan without any commitment to pardoning Krishnan.

Krishnan’s family contacted Yusuffali. He reached all the stakeholders. In January 2021, the Sudanese family agreed to pardon Krishnan.

Yusuffali decided to pay 500,000 Dirhams (Rs one crore approximately) as compensation in the court to secure Krishnan’s release.
