An NRI businessman from Nigeria fell victim to a real estate scam, losing ₹3.6 crore in the process. The fraud involved a popular Tollywood celebrity who endorsed the real estate company responsible for duping him, timesofindia.indiatimes.com reported. The victim, in search of land in Hyderabad with potential for appreciation, came across social media advertisements for properties in Kokapet and surrounding areas, promoted by the celebrity.

In 2021, during his visit to India, the businessman contacted representatives of the real estate firm, who showcased various ventures in Ranga Reddy district. After discussions, he decided to purchase 2,100 square yards of land in Kokapet for ₹3.6 crore, with the agreement that the land would be registered in his name within a year.

Authorities have since registered a case against the real estate company for conspiracy, cheating, and breach of trust. The case highlights the risks involved in real estate dealings, even when endorsed by celebrities

However, as time passed, the businessman discovered that the plot he was promised had already been registered under other buyers’ names. When he confronted the proprietor, he was assured that the previous buyers would be convinced to cancel their sale deeds, clearing the way for the complainant to receive the land. The businessman was asked to pay any outstanding dues, which he did, and was then shown the sale deeds allegedly prepared in his favor.

The final step was to complete the registration at the sub-registrar’s office. However, when the businessman arrived as agreed, the proprietor failed to show up.
