India reiterates support for Myanmar’s democratic transition and pledges continued humanitarian aid following devastating earthquake
On the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit held in Bangkok on April 4, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Chairman of the State Administration Council and Prime Minister of Myanmar.
The discussion focused on the recent earthquake in Myanmar and the broader regional and bilateral challenges, including democratic restoration and border security.
Prime Minister Modi highlighted India’s rapid humanitarian response under “Operation Brahma” following the catastrophic earthquake in Myanmar. India has been providing medical aid, relief materials, and disaster support, reaffirming its role as the First Responder in the region. Senior General Min Aung Hlaing expressed appreciation for India’s swift and sustained efforts.
PM Modi assured continued Indian support for Myanmar’s recovery, while urging a peaceful, inclusive political transition.

Beyond humanitarian aid, PM Modi emphasized the importance of Myanmar returning to democratic governance through inclusive and credible elections

He stressed that there is no military solution to the ongoing ethnic conflict and that sustainable peace can only come through dialogue involving all communities
The two leaders also discussed cooperation on key security challenges, including joint efforts to counter insurgency, transnational crimes, and human trafficking along the India-Myanmar border.
PM Modi acknowledged Myanmar’s assistance in rescuing Indian nationals from cyber-scam centers located near the Myanmar–Thailand border.
Both sides reviewed progress on India-backed infrastructure development projects in Myanmar. The Prime Minister reiterated India’s commitment to supporting the socio-economic development of all communities in Myanmar.
