The Civil Aviation Authority of Qatar is expecting close to 36 million passengers to travel through the country’s airports in 2022, which is more than double the passengers the airports received last year. Incidentally, Qatar is expecting passenger traffic to record a growth of 90 to 105 per cent in comparison to the numbers last year, reported ETTravelWorld.

In its special report on the latest projects and forecasts, the civil aviation authority is expecting a boom in the volume of charter and shuttle flights due to arrival, departure, and transit during the FIFA 2022 World Cup. The country is expecting to welcome at least 3.5 million passengers (arrivals, departures, and transit) between November and December 2022, when the FIFA World Cup takes place. The Hamad International Airport in Doha, the base of Qatar Airways is expected to handle between 34 million and 36 million passengers this year, roughly double the number served by the airport last year.

During the World Cup, several Middle East carriers will operate dozens of flights to and from Doha on match days. Hamad International Airport, which only handles international flights, served 17.7 million passengers in 2021, and 38.8 million in 2019, the year before the Covid-19 pandemic began

The report prepared by the Air Transport Department follows two tracks in the predictions related to the number of passengers during the World Cup: Conservative and Aggressive. Passenger traffic forecasts show the possibility of recording a significant growth ranging from +90 per cent to +105 per cent compared to the year 2021, bringing the total number of passengers, according to the conservative track, to approximately 34 million, while the number of passengers, according to the aggressive track, is expected to reach more than 36 million passengers, assuming travel recovery continues, and more countries remove health-related travel restrictions.
