The resolution says “Vaisakhi is a special occasion on which Sikhs remember the founding in 1699 of the Order of Khalsa, which has played an important role in shaping the religion’s history and identity

Washington: A bipartisan group of lawmakers has introduced a resolution in the US House of Representatives to designate April 14 as National Sikh Day to honour and celebrate the important role played by the Sikh community in strengthening and inspiring the people of the United States, a PTI report in Thr Tribune, Chandigarh, says.

The resolution says “Vaisakhi is a special occasion on which Sikhs remember the founding in 1699 of the Order of Khalsa, which has played an important role in shaping the religion’s history and identity

It further said the US is enriched by the diversity of its residents, who have cultivated a climate of social tolerance and intellectual pluralism that has sustained the nation throughout its history.

Introduced by Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, the resolution says that through leading charitable events, the Sikh community embodies the sense of public service that underlies the founding principles of the US.

Meanwhile the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has welcomed the resolution introduced by the United States (US) House of Representatives, supporting the designation of Vaisakhi, April 14 of each year, as ‘National Sikh Day’. This resolution number 1007, dedicating April 14 of each year to Sikhs has been introduced in 117th Congress of US House of Representatives.

The resolution reads that Sikhs began immigrating into the US over 100 years ago, and have played an important role in developing the US.

Introduced by Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, the resolution says that through leading charitable events, the Sikh community embodies the sense of public service that underlies the founding principles of the US.

SGPC President Advocate Dhami has termed this resolution of the US Congress as a matter of pride for the Sikh Quam (community). He said that the Sikhs all over the world have shown their significant existence with their rich culture and hard work.

“If today the US Congress is recognising the Vaisakhi as ‘National Sikh Day’, then it is a tribute to the ideology of the Gurus (Sikh masters) and the establishment of Khalsa Panth”, said Advocate Dhami.
