The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has recently introduced amendments to the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Rules, ushering in a distinct set of guidelines for non-resident individuals. The circular, issued on January 16, 2024, delineates significant modifications and prerequisites for Aadhaar enrolment and updates. Notably, NRIs, irrespective of age, possessing a valid Indian Passport, can now apply for Aadhaar from any Aadhaar Kendra.

The updated guidelines emphasize that for NRI children, a valid Indian passport stands as the sole accepted Proof of Identity (POI) and Proof of Address (POA). Furthermore, a noteworthy change mandates the submission of a birth certificate for both resident Indians and NRIs born on or after October 1, 2023.

  • For NRIs, a valid Indian passport remains the exclusive POI, and Form 2 is specifically designated for those enrolling or updating with an address outside of India

  • Additionally, Forms 3, 4, 5, and 6 are tailored for enrolling children, accounting for various age categories and addresses, and distinguishing between residents and NRIs

The revised Form 1 will now serve as the standard for Aadhaar enrolment for individuals aged 18 and above, whether they are residents or non-residents, provided they have proof of address in India.

NRIs undergoing Aadhaar enrolment are now required to furnish an email address as part of their Aadhaar details. It’s worth noting that, in accordance with Form 1 standards, no SMS or text messages will be dispatched to non-Indian cellphone numbers provided by NRIs.

For NRIs, a valid Indian passport remains the exclusive POI, and Form 2 is specifically designated for those enrolling or updating with an address outside of India. Additionally, Forms 3, 4, 5, and 6 are tailored for enrolling children, accounting for various age categories and addresses, and distinguishing between residents and NRIs. These comprehensive adjustments aim to streamline and enhance the Aadhaar enrolment process for non-resident individuals.
