Saudi Arabia fines Indian Rs 66 crore for defiling environment

In a significant crackdown on environmental violations, Saudi Arabia has taken stringent action against an Indian expatriate for unlawfully disposing of untreated wastewater in the holy land of Mecca.

The expatriate, apprehended on November 11, has been subjected to a substantial fine of INR 66 crores by the Saudi government, marking a severe response to the infringement of the country’s environmental laws, as reported by keralakaumudi.com.

The Environmental Security Special Force (SFES) revealed that the accused was caught red-handed while dumping untreated wastewater, an act deemed highly threatening to the local ecosystem. A post shared by the Special Force on X emphasized the gravity of the offense and underscored that the individual would face legal consequences as per Saudi Arabian law. Subsequently, the court imposed a hefty fine of Rs 66 crore along with a 10-year prison sentence.

Under the strict environmental regulations of Saudi Arabia, the act of disposing of untreated water in non-designated areas carries severe penalties. Offenders can face fines of up to 30 million Saudi Riyals (approximately Rs 66,88,42,778) or imprisonment for a period of up to 10 years. In certain cases, the legal system may impose a combination of both penalties on the accused.
