Spiritual Leader Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev visited Muscat on Wednesday. It marked his final destination before he heads back to India.

He rode his bike from Fujairah to Muscat and met the media at the Indian Embassy.

“A privilege to be in Muscat, a juncture of great civilisations,” he tweeted once he reached Muscat.

Indian Ambassador Amit Narang took the questions from the media representatives after Sadhguru‘s opening address.

In an interview with Pravasi Samawad, Sadhguru said, “People ask me when did I become a soil scientist or an environmentalist, and I say I am none of them. I am just like a worm on this planet. When I crawl on this world, I know what is happening to the soil because it is part of my body. It is happening to everybody. But they are not paying attention to that because they are busy with their psychological processes. Because I do not have anything here, I know what is happening in the world.”

When asked while soil is going through deficiencies is it suffering silently, he said: “The soil is screaming, screaming. Life in soil is screaming without the necessary food to eat.”

When 27,000 species are dying for you, you are not screaming, they are screaming.”

So why are not others hearing the scream of the soil?

“Because most of the people today are living in the urban situations. People who live in the remote locations know that this is happening. But they do not have voice in the world. So #savesoil is one of the efforts to give the voice because urban people have all the voice but they are busy with their own thinking. They have their own world and is not living in this world at all,” Sadhguru noted.

Should we focus on children and make them aware about the vulnerability of the soil?

He answered: “Everyone says let children do it. But if we do not set examples how should children do?

And above as far as I am concerned, lot of people may not like this, but I would say until they are about 14 to 15, let them be children and enjoy life.”

Conscious Planet’s Save Soil campaign states that unless we change how we manage soil, over 90% of it could become degraded by 2050. A global food crisis would become inevitable.

Save Soil is a response to this crisis – a global civil movement to inspire a conscious approach to saving soil and planet.

The aim is to activate the support of over 3.5 billion people (over 60% of the world’s voting population) to accelerate policy change across the world to revitalize dying agricultural soils.

The Sadhguru had a live public event at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Center. In his speech he said that soil protection needs policies taken globally toward the preservation. He pointed out soil is not a resource, but a source. When asked about individual efforts he said, “One might think of making the soil in the kitchen garden.”

Mixed with stories, experiences and scientific facts, Sadhguru speaking to a fully packed audience of various nationalities spoke about the GCC nations and India being part of the early maritime trade partners and thus being important in historical relations going back to even 12,000 years, according to archaeological findings.

“I am now waiting to drive through the Indian monsoon. I was told about a place in Oman with greenery and trees. Now I understand it is in the Southern part of Oman,” he said referring to Salalah in the Dhofar governorate.

He also pointed out that we know it is not the rains that bring the trees but the trees that can bring in the rain. The soil needs shade to protect the organisms that live in it. We can also extend and stretch the area of coverage of greenery.

Since the campaign launched in January 2022, over 70 nations have voiced their support and ten governments have signed MoUs, including Bahrain and UAE, committing to raising the organic content of their soils to 3-6% (the minimum necessary levels for growing nourishing food). Leading institutions such as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP), The Muslim World League, The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and many more have also pledged their support.

“Soil extinction is not just another ecological challenge. It is an existential threat. If we do the right things now, we can significantly turn this situation around and regenerate the soil in the next 15-25 years,” said Sadhguru.

The Journey to Save Soil

On March 21st, 2022, Sadhguru (Yogi, NY Times bestselling author, and founder of Conscious Planet) set off on a lone 100-day, 30,000 km motorcycle journey from London (UK) to southern India to raise awareness about soil extinction. Since then he has visited 26 countries, meeting with governments, business leaders, scientific experts and public figures at over 100 events. He has spoken at 17 Save Soil public events, with thousands in attendance.

-Thousands of public figures and renowned scientific experts have been involved in the movement, spreading the word online and supporting at our public events across Europe and the Middle East. Names include Dr Jane Goodall, the Dalai Lama, Toni Garrn, Anar Dreams, Carice van Houten, Professor Rattan Lal (World Food Prize Awardee 2020) and many more.

Sadhguru addressed representatives from 197 countries at the 15th session of the Conference of Parties (COP15) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). Sadhguru in his address distilled out one overarching objective – to ensure a minimum of 3-6% organic content in agricultural soil and provided a three-pronged strategy to achieve this.

The French government’s “4 per 1000” initiative to mitigate climate change and increase food security through soil regeneration has also signed an MoU with Save Soil.

Germany’s Education Ministry has sent a directive for children of Germany to participate to #SaveSoil. Children’s artworks will be displayed as part of “Save Soil – a global exhibition of art and poetry.”

“Soil is quite literally the Mother of Biodiversity on this planet. With out rich soil, there is no possibility of Biodiversity. It is the Womb that births Life on this planet. The way to protect Biodiversity is to #SaveSoil,” Sadhguru summarises.

“We have separated ourselves with nationality, race, religion, but we all come from the same soil, eat of the same soil & when we die, go back to the same soil. Soil is the common factor,” has become a popular quote of Sadhguru.

As global citizens, he said, our voice is a privilege we must exercise to create our world the way we want it. #SaveSoil is an expression of our global citizenry, humanity & responsibility for every Life on the planet. Let us make it happen.
