Teachers in Covid-hit Telangana take to ganja cultivation to supplement income

New band of peddlers are mostly student addicts; Intelligence officials submit comprehensive report to Telangana government

Pressures of financial crisis during the two Covid-19 lockdowns, had compelled several teachers in Telangana  to take up the culltivation of ganja to make ends meet and earn some  extra money,   a report in the Deccan Chronicle, says.

Following a large number of complaints of  rampant drug peddling, Intelligence officials, have submitted a comprehensive report to the government.

The meeting prompted Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao to chair a high-level meeting to deal with this problem.

According to sources, teachers from both government and private institutions had taken to ganja cultivation on their house premises,  in fields and other public places.

The offenders have chosen new routes to supply the material to kingpins, who, in turn, smuggle and supply the material to their customers.

Sources says “Most of the ganja is coming from Andhra Pradesh and Odisha and is being ransported to different places via Hyderabad. Only ten per cent of ganja was seized by the law enforcement agencies. The offenders have chosen new routes to supply the material to kingpins, who, in turn, smuggle and supply the material to their customers,” sources said.

The banned substances being brought into the states, mostly by Nigerians, include heroin, cocaine, ephedrine, charas, hashish and MDMA.

“The new lot of peddlers are young drug addicts, mostly  school and college students, which has widened the supply chain,” sources said, adding that lack of coordination within the law enforcement agencies is one of the reasons for the increase in supply.
