That day is already here forever. August 7, has been declared as the National Javelin Day to honour the stellar achievement of Neeraj Chopra, who won a gold at the Tokyo Olympics.
The announcement was made by the Athletic Federation of India (AFI) on Wednesday.
At a function to honour several athletes, including Neeraj Chopra, AFI Planning Commission Chairman Lalit Bhanot said from next year all affiliated units of the federation across the country would hold javelin competitions in their respective states to mark the day.
His javelin seemed to soar through the air in what seemed like an endless flight, before coming to rest at that historic mark. In that very instant Chopra sensed he’d done something special.
He hoped the step would help to foster and promote interest in javelin throwing in young sportsperson across the country.
Chopra’s parents, Satish and Saroj Devi were also present at the function. They said although their son was a mischievous child, if he made up his mind to do something, he’d always do it with dedication.
The 23-year-old Olympian from Panipat, Haryana, returned to India in a blaze of glory after winning India’s solitary gold medal at the just concluded Tokyo Olympics – the first-ever in athletic in 100 years.
