A flight connecting Imphal-Aizawl-Imphal under the RCS UDAN programme started on October 30, 2022. It operates five times a week while a flight connecting Shillong-Lilabari-Shillong started on October 31 and will operate 4 times a week. Also, Alliance Air flights between Lilabari-Ziro-Lilabari started on October 31 and will operate twice a week.
Speaking during the inauguration, Indian Minister of Civil Aviation, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia also informed that two new routes connecting Agartala to Chittagong and Imphal to Mandalay will be operationalised under International UDAN.
The enhanced aerial connectivity in the cities of the North-east of the country will play a vital role in creating ease of living for the residents of the region and boost tourism and trade, said the official statement.
The Minister also announced that under International UDAN, two new routes Agartala-Chittagong-Agartala and Imphal-Mandalay-Imphal will be operationalised which will expand the scope of air connectivity in the Northeastern states from national to the international level
In his inaugural address, Scindia said that the commencement of the flights marked a significant step in the direction of providing air connectivity to every part of the country. He also said that the Union Government had given special emphasis on air connectivity for the Northeastern region. In the last eight years, seven airports had been developed in the region.
Under the UDAN scheme, 14 per cent of routes have been awarded to the North-east. Under UDAN 4.2, about 18 per cent have been awarded to the North-east. A INR 500 crore corpus has been dedicated to the air connectivity of the North-east while under Krishi UDAN, 25 airports have been incentivised in the region.
The Minister also announced that under International UDAN, two new routes Agartala-Chittagong-Agartala and Imphal-Mandalay-Imphal will be operationalised which will expand the scope of air connectivity in the Northeastern states from national to the international level.
Chittagong is in Bangladesh and Mandalay in Myanmar.
