UAE’s Dh4 m offer for proposals to tackle climate change, food security problems

A new competition in the UAE offers funding up to Dh4 million for next-generation proposals to tackle climate change and food security, an exclusive KT report says

The UAE Space Agency, in partnership with the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE), announced the launch during the Expo 2020 Dubai’s Space Week.

Two projects will be selected and will each receive up to Dh2 million in funding, technical support and assistance from leading experts. 

Scientists, entrepreneurs, academics and innovators seeking to address some of humanity’s greatest challenges are invited to participate and accelerate the UAE’s knowledge-driven economy.

Sarah bint Yousef Al Amiri, Minister of State for Advanced Technology and Chairwoman of the UAE Space Agency, said, “Expo 2020 Dubai represents a unique opportunity to galvanise the world around global challenges and catalyse collaboration for a brighter future”. 

She added, “Our competition aims to find the best and brightest academics, entrepreneurs and scientists to create applications that tackle climate change or food security. We are seeking competitive proposals that are original, feasible, scalable and backed by meticulous research and analysis:.

The competition aims to find technically innovative ideas using data gathered from outer space to create services that support agricultural or environmental practices.

Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, opined, “Climate change and food security are interlinked. Higher temperatures and extreme weather events have a devastating effect on global food systems. In turn, food systems are responsible for more than one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions. To chart a sustainable future, we must address these challenges head on, which requires innovative solutions”.
