WASHINGTON, DC

US President Joe Biden called the world to pursue the values of Lord Mahavir on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti that fell on April 14 this year.

While extending his wishes to the Jain community, who are spread all over the world, Biden exhorted the world community to follow the path of non-violence, truthfulness, and compassion and learn from the teachings of the great Indian philosopher and thinker, the 24th and last Tirthankara, Lord Mahavir.

“Jill and I send warm greetings on Mahavir Jayanti to people of the Jain faith. This is a day to strive for peace, happiness, and the success of all. May we each pursue the values Mahavir Swami embodied: to seek truth, turn from violence, and live in harmony with each other,” Biden said in twiter post.

Mahavir Swami was born in 599 B.C. on the thirteenth day of the rising moon during the month of Chaitra in the Vira Nirvana Samvat calendar.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also greeted people on the occasion of Mahavir Swami’s Jayanti. “Mahavir Jayanti greetings to you all. We recall the noble teachings of Bhagwan Mahavir, especially the emphasis on peace, compassion and brotherhood,” PM Modi tweeted.

Lord Mahaveera was born as Prince Vardhamana to King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala of the Ikshvaku Dynasty. He was born in 599 B.C. on the thirteenth day of the rising moon during the month of Chaitra in the Vira Nirvana Samvat calendar.

According to Gregorian calendar, Vardhamana was born during the month of March-April, which is when Mahaveer Jayanti is celebrated today. Most historians agree that he was born in Kshatriyakund in the Kingdom of Vaishali which is in modern day Bihar.
