Metro Vancouver truck driver evades 15-year prison sentence, flees to India as RCMP launches international manhunt
Raj Kumar Mehmi, a 60-year-old truck driver from Surrey, BC, has successfully eluded a 15-year prison sentence after fleeing to India in October 2022.
The escape follows Mehmi’s conviction for drug-related charges, stemming from a 2017 arrest when the Canada Border Services Agency uncovered a substantial cocaine stash worth $3.2 million in his semi-trailer truck.
Considered “still at large,” a Canada-wide arrest warrant has been issued, and the RCMP is actively seeking an INTERPOL Red Notice to facilitate international cooperation in bringing Mehmi to justice
Despite the sentencing scheduled for January 9, 2023, Mehmi opted to abscond a month earlier, prompting a judge to deliver the verdict in absentia.
Now considered “still at large,” a Canada-wide arrest warrant has been issued, and the RCMP is actively seeking an INTERPOL Red Notice to facilitate international cooperation in bringing Mehmi to justice.
