His death highlights the critical importance of meticulous medical care and the dire consequences of oversight
Dr Amit Patel, a highly respected Indian-origin consultant haematologist based in Manchester, tragically passed away in October 2021. Known for his expertise and dedication, Dr. Patel was a pivotal member of the National Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) for hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH).
At the age of 43, Dr. Patel’s life was cut short due to a series of medical errors. The coroner’s investigation revealed that an incomplete presentation led to a flawed recommendation by the HLH MDT.
Dr. Patel’s passing is a profound loss to the medical community and society at large. He was not only a distinguished medical professional with numerous achievements but also a compassionate individual, a loving husband, and a devoted father
This misjudgment resulted in Dr. Patel undergoing an unnecessary EBUS procedure on September 2nd, which significantly contributed to his untimely death. The coroner emphasized that with thorough review and appropriate decisions, his death could have been prevented.
Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust has since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Dr. Patel’s death and the quality of treatment he received. This initiative aims to prevent such tragedies in the future and to honor Dr. Patel’s legacy.
