Victim alleges secret marriage, dowry demands, and mental harassment; FIR filed with Women’s Police (West)
Ahmedabad: A woman from Thaltej has filed a complaint with the Women’s Police (West) against her Non-Resident Indian (NRI) husband living in Canada, accusing him of cheating, harassment, and emotional and financial abuse. According to the FIR, the man allegedly concealed his ongoing relationship and marriage with another woman in Canada and subjected his legal wife in India to severe mistreatment, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.
The two were married in Ahmedabad in June 2023 through a family-arranged match. As part of a customary tradition, the woman’s parents gave the groom ₹51,000 before the wedding. During their honeymoon abroad, the woman alleges her husband consumed alcohol excessively, verbally abused her, and took inappropriate photos without consent.
The woman claims her NRI husband was already married in Canada, demanded ₹50 lakh in dowry, and later blocked her after threatening divorce—FIR names husband and mother-in-law
Upon returning to India, the couple briefly stayed at the woman’s parents’ house before the husband left for Canada, assuring he would begin her spousal visa process. However, weeks passed with no progress. Later, the woman discovered that not only had he failed to apply for her visa, but he also demanded an additional ₹50 lakh, citing the dowry as “inadequate.”
The husband allegedly coerced the woman to send compromising photos, threatening to divorce her if she refused. Eventually, he blocked her on all platforms and informed her of their separation via WhatsApp.
The complainant also uncovered that her husband was in an active relationship with another woman in Canada—whom he had legally married and even had a tattoo of her name. She further alleged that her in-laws were fully aware of the earlier marriage but went ahead with arranging the new one regardless.
To her shock, she later found that her name had been listed as “non-accompanying spouse” in her husband’s Canadian immigration records, further validating her concerns of deception.
The woman has sought legal action against both her husband and mother-in-law, accusing them of harassment, betrayal, and manipulation under the guise of marriage.
