Indian Americans Poised to Influence U.S. Presidential Election Outcome in 2024, Says Democratic Party Leader
In anticipation of the upcoming U.S. presidential elections in November 2024, Ajay Bhutoria, a prominent Democratic National Committee member, asserts that Indian Americans will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the nation. As a key figure in the Democratic Party’s National Finance Committee, Bhutoria emphasizes the significance of the Indian American community, particularly in battleground states, where their collective influence could sway the outcome of the race for the White House.
Bhutoria, who has been actively involved in Democratic campaigns since the inception of Joe Biden’s first-term run, underscores the historic role that Asian Americans, especially South Asian Indian Americans, will play in this crucial election. Highlighting pivotal battleground states such as Michigan, Nevada, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Georgia, Bhutoria points to data indicating that the Asian American vote, particularly Indian Americans, could be the deciding factor in securing victory.
Drawing on past successes in the 2020 and 2022 elections, Bhutoria advocates for early and active participation by Asian American and Indian American communities. He emphasizes the importance of reaching out to voters in their native languages, citing efforts in 2020 where campaign materials were translated into 19 languages, including Hindi, Punjabi, Telugu, Tamil, and Chinese.
Bhutoria acknowledges the increasing involvement of Indian Americans in U.S. politics, citing the election of a substantial number of Democrat Indian Americans in 2022. While discussing potential Republican candidates, he downplays the impact of Indian American contenders Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy, expressing skepticism about their chances in the primaries and affirming that the Democratic Party is strategically investing in grassroots initiatives in battleground states.
Addressing the broader political landscape, Bhutoria recognizes the positive trend of more Indian Americans engaging in civic duties and politics, expressing pride in their increasing desire to serve the country in various capacities. With Indian Americans comprising around 16% of eligible Asian American voters and consistently leaning Democratic, their role in the upcoming elections is poised to be a significant factor in determining the nation’s trajectory.
