Germany is ramping up efforts to recruit skilled workers from India to alleviate its labor shortages, according to a recent report by Schengen News. The German Labor Minister, Hubertus Heil, emphasized the country’s proactive stance during a meeting with Indian students at the Free University of Berlin. “Germany wants to hire a high number of skilled workers from India,” Heil stated, highlighting the strategic importance of Indian talent in addressing Germany’s workforce needs.
This initiative is part of a broader Indian Skilled Worker strategy that will be presented during the German-Indian government consultations this autumn.
The latest EURES report on labor market shortages reveals that Germany is experiencing a deficit in over 70 occupations, particularly in the transportation, manufacturing, construction, healthcare, engineering, and IT sectors
The strategy is being developed in collaboration with the Foreign Office, the Federal Ministry of Labor, German businesses, state governments, and other relevant ministries.
Minister Heil underscored the significance of welcoming “bright minds and helping hands” from India to strengthen Germany’s labor market. He pointed out that the country’s demographic challenges are a major factor driving this recruitment push. Citing a study by the Institute for Employment Research (IAB), Heil noted that Germany will require an additional seven million workers by 2035.
