Fareeda Begum (49), a woman hailing from Hyderabad, found herself stranded in Oman after being purportedly trafficked from Dubai under the guise of a job opportunity. The Indian Embassy in Oman has stepped in to offer refuge to Fareeda, responding to the plea of a Bundi-based activist, Charmesh Sharma.

Sharma, dedicated to aiding Indians facing challenges abroad, took swift action by reaching out to the President, Minister of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), and the Indian Embassy in Oman on January 7, a day after the matter was reported by PTI Videos.

Fareeda initially traveled to Dubai for work through an agent but fell ill after 21 days. In her weakened state, she was sent to Muscat for employment, as shared by her sister Famida in a recent statement to PTI Videos. “Her health is continuously deteriorating, and she is unable to even talk on the phone now. I request the Indian Embassy to rescue my sister and bring her back home,” Famida pleaded.

Activist Sharma revealed that the embassy’s response outlined Fareeda’s visit to the Indian Embassy on January 8, where she was provided accommodation at the embassy’s shelter in Muscat, inclusive of boarding and lodging facilities

According to Sharma, instead of repatriating Fareeda to India when she fell ill, the agent, Shahanaz, sent her to Muscat. Allegedly, Fareeda’s mobile phone, passport, and other documents were confiscated, compelling her to work against her will, as Sharma informed PTI on Thursday. The Indian Embassy in Oman promptly acknowledged the complaint, with the embassy’s welfare officer, Pradeep Kumar, responding to Sharma’s communication on January 10.

Sharma revealed that the embassy’s response outlined Fareeda’s visit to the Indian Embassy on January 8, where she was provided accommodation at the embassy’s shelter in Muscat, inclusive of boarding and lodging facilities. The embassy assured Sharma that Fareeda’s case is actively being pursued with local authorities for her swift repatriation to India.
