The ongoing corruption investigation surrounding Singapore’s Indian-origin Transport Minister, S. Iswaran, is causing significant concern within the constituency he represents, according to a statement by a senior minister, as reported by PTI.

Desmond Lee, the National Development Minister overseeing the West Coast Group Representation Constituency (GRC) led by Iswaran, acknowledged the gravity of the situation. MPs in the GRC are actively engaging with residents to address key issues such as the cost of living and inequality amid the challenging circumstances.

“It has had an impact, is a big impact, but that has not distracted us from the important mission of continuing to serve our residents.”

“Since news of Iswaran’s corruption case emerged in July, we have managed to maintain the team’s cohesion, motivating them to continue serving the community with passion and dedication,” stated Lee.

Iswaran was apprehended by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) on July 11, 2023, and is currently out on bail. The investigation originated from an unrelated matter, though specific details about the charges have not been disclosed. Iswaran has been placed on leave of absence, with his monthly pay reduced to SGD 8,500 until further notice. However, he continues to receive his MP allowance.

In response to questions about the lingering impact on the GRC, Lee admitted, in an interview with The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao, that the incident has indeed left a substantial mark. He refrained from providing further details but emphasized that the focus remains on serving residents and ensuring the uninterrupted provision of essential services. Lee stated, “It has had an impact, is a big impact, but that has not distracted us from the important mission of continuing to serve our residents.”
